Extended School Year Services
As a student receiving special education services, your child’s IEP team is responsible for considering the need for extended school year services (ESY) to ensure the provision of free appropriate public education. Due to the pandemic and its impact on many students, DCS is offering ESY to all students with an IEP.
The difference between extended school year (ESY) and summer school is that ESY is designed to prevent kids from regressing by allowing them to maintain the skills they learned during the school year. Summer School is designed to catch kids up who missed learning during the year. The purpose of ESY is to maintain learning, and any related services are provided for half the service minutes that are listed on the child's IEP during the regular school year. No new skills will be taught, only reinforcing what was already learned during the year.
Extended School Year (ESY) services will be offered during June 2024 and will be located at:
Elementary - Oak Park Elementary School
Middle - Decatur Middle School
High - Decatur High School
If you want your child to participate in ESY services, please complete and return this form to your child’s special education teacher or mail it to Decatur City Schools, Attn: Special Services, 212 Fourth AV SE, Decatur, AL 35601. Please return by May 15, 2024.
If you are interested in your student attending, please complete the application at Extended School Year or call 256-552-4637 by May 15, 2024.
If you have any questions, please call 256-552-4637. Please contact your local school principal for Summer Learning Academy.
